Adam Smith serves as IPI’s Senior Program Officer for External Relations and Special Projects. He joined the International Peace Institute in June of 2006 and served as Special Assistant to the Vice President until August 2007. As Senior Program Officer for External Relations and Special Projects, Adam both oversees IPI’s development office and maintains his own portfolio of research. His interests focus on a variety of topics, including peace operations, the role of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), and UN reform. He is currently involved with the UN field capacity project and the Task Force on Inter and Intra-state Conflict, both within the Coping with Crisis program.

Before joining IPI, Adam consulted for the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s Program on Global Security and Sustainability, and spent several years as a consultant for a non-profit and philanthropic services consulting firm. Adam has also worked with Security Council Report and the Foreign Policy Leadership Council, and served as a teaching assistant at Columbia University for a course entitled Economics for International Affairs.

He holds a Bachelor’s in Foreign Service from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a Master’s in International Affairs with a concentration in International Security Policy from Columbia University.
