Dr. Markus E. Bouillon has directed IPI’s Middle East Program since 2005. His current work primarily focuses on the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Levant, Iraq, Iran, as well as on cross-regional challenges confronting the Middle Eastern state.
Prior to joining IPI, Markus served as a political affairs officer and special assistant in the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process under Terje Rød-Larsen and Alvaro de Soto and worked on the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559. He has also worked and consulted for the Government of the United Arab Emirates (2003), the International Crisis Group (2003), Oxford Analytica (2001-2002), the Control Risks Group (2003), the Boston Consulting Group (2001), a political foundation in Jordan (1998), the European Parliament (1997) and the German Bundestag (1997).
A Middle East specialist, Markus has extensive field experience throughout the region, having lived and worked in Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates for a combined time of more than five years. He is a speaker of Hebrew and Arabic, in addition to his native German, and has also studied French, Russian and Persian. Markus gained a doctorate in international relations at St. Antony’s College, Oxford University and a Masters degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and is also an alumnus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Freiburg University in Germany.
Beyond the Middle East, Markus’ research interests focuses on political economy, the causes and effects of political and economic transition, and the theory and philosophy of international relations.
