Vanessa Wyeth

Research Fellow, Peacebuilding and Statebuilding | wyeth@ipinst.org

Vanessa Wyeth joined IPI in February 2004, working on postconflict statebuilding and peacebuilding. She co-edited IPI's recent volume Building States to Build Peace. Vanessa arrived at IPI after spending a year in Kosovo working with the UN Population Fund, having previously consulted for UNFPA in New York. She spent several months with the Centre for Conflict Management in Butare, Rwanda, where she was a researcher on the gacaca tribunals.

Vanessa has also spent several years as an economic consultant in the private sector. She holds a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University, with a concentration in human rights and conflict resolution and a regional focus on Africa. She holds a BA in international relations from Boston University. She has traveled to over 65 countries, and has lived in Niger, Rwanda, and Kosovo.

Preventive Diplomacy: Regions in Focus

 

Over the past few years there has been a resurgence of interest in employing preventive tools to thwart the outbreak and escalation of violent conflict. This paper looks at the state of and challenges ahead for preventive diplomacy in four different regions of the world: Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Northeast Asia.
