IPI Hosts Premiere of HBO Film "Sergio" at UN
On June 18, 2009, at the United Nations, IPI and HBO Documentary Films hosted a screening of Sergio, a film that recounts the life and death of UN diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was killed during the bombing of Baghdad’s Canal Hotel in 2003.
IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen and HBO Co-President Richard Plepler made opening remarks, as did Pulitzer Prize-winning author Samantha Power, whose book Chasing the Flame: Sergio Vieira de Mello and the Fight to Save the World was the basis for the film.
The event was attended by Permanent Representatives from Missions to the UN, as well as de Mello’s closest colleagues and friends, including some of those who were in Baghdad during the 2003 bombing.
The film viewing was followed by a reception hosted by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
