John Burnett Reports on "Fighting Twenty-First Century Piracy" at IPI
On February 3rd, John Burnett, author of Dangerous Waters: Modern Piracy and Terror on the High Seas, spoke at IPI on the resurgence of piracy off the coast of Somalia and on international responses to prevent and address it.
The discussion, moderated by Warren Hoge, IPI Vice President and Director of External Relations, was the first installment of IPI’s Speaker Series. For each meeting of this new series, IPI invites a speaker to present on a pressing current issue and to engage participants in a broad-ranging question-and-answer session.
John Burnett is author of Dangerous Waters (Dutton 2002), an investigation of modern-day piracy inspired by his own experience of being attacked by pirates in the South China Sea. He is also author of Where Soldiers Fear to Tread: A Relief Worker's Tale of Survival (Bantam 2005), an account of his experiences as a relief worker for the World Food Program in Somalia from 1997 to 1998.

Arbour: What the Rule of Law Means
“In my understanding of the rule of law, fundamentally, what the rule of law means is that it embraces the principle of equality before the law,” Louise Arbour, president of the International Crisis Group (ICG), told an IPI audience on May 10, 2012. Ms. Arbour outlined that this means that no one is above the law and everyone has both equal protection and equal benefit of the law.

Shachtman: Cyber Threats Akin to South Bronx, Not Pearl Harbor
“There’s not a danger of a cyber Pearl Harbor… it’s more like the South Bronx circa 1999, where there’s a danger that it becomes such a tough neighborhood that no one wants to set up shop there and people move out,” Noah Shachtman, editor of the Danger Room blog at Wired magazine and non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution, told an IPI audience at a panel on cyber security on May 3, 2011.
