The UN in Sierra Leone: Innovations in Integrated Peacebuilding
On June 9, 2009, IPI hosted a breakfast policy discussion titled “The UN in Sierra Leone: Innovations in Integrated Peacebuilding,” with speaker Mr. Michael von der Schulenburg, Executive Representative of the Secretary-General (ERSG) of the UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL).
Mr. von der Schulenburg spoke about the experience of UNIPSIL as the first integrated peacebuilding office led by the Department of Political Affairs. He emphasized the innovations being introduced in Sierra Leone through the UN Joint Vision for Peacebuilding, a strategy that integrates UN efforts across a range of activities. He also highlighted the important role played by the UN Peacebuilding Commission in providing political support for a coordinated response by the UN and the international community in support of the Government of Sierra Leone.
The event was chaired by Ambassador John Hirsch, IPI’s Senior Advisor and former Vice President, and is part of IPI's Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSG) series.
