SRSG Y. J. Choi Addresses the Challenges of Peace in Côte d'Ivoire
On January 14th, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) Mr. Y.J. Choi addressed a select group of diplomats and other members of the United Nations and NGO communities in IPI’s Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security, and Development.
Introduced by IPI Senior Vice President and Director of Studies Edward C. Luck, Mr. Choi discussed the challenges facing Côte d'Ivoire and the particular importance of reaching three milestones: identification, disarmament, and elections. In UNOCI's quest to support the Ivoirian people in reaching peace and stability, Mr. Choi noted that he was "optimistically cautious."
Appointed to his current position in October 2007, Mr. Choi previously served as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, as well as Vice Foreign Minister of South Korea and has also served in the United Nations as Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.
The lunch-time event was part of IPI's Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSG) series.

Arbour: What the Rule of Law Means
“In my understanding of the rule of law, fundamentally, what the rule of law means is that it embraces the principle of equality before the law,” Louise Arbour, president of the International Crisis Group (ICG), told an IPI audience on May 10, 2012. Ms. Arbour outlined that this means that no one is above the law and everyone has both equal protection and equal benefit of the law.

An April 27th roundtable discussion at IPI titled “Preventing Conflicts in Africa: The Role of Early Warning and Response Systems” examined the progress, prospects and challenges of regional and international early warning and response mechanisms to monitor, anticipate, and mitigate potential conflict situations in Africa.
