A recent roundtable discussion at IPI titled "Strengthening International Environmental Governance: Exploring System-Wide Responses" considered reform options for international environmental governance (IEG) in the context of the Belgrade Process, the Nairobi-Helsinki Outcome and the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) summit.

By 2050, 25 million to 1 billion people are expected to be migrating due to environmental factors. Though examining linkages between environmental conditions and migration have been on the international agenda at least since 1992, only in recent years have they become better understood.

Acknowledging the disappointment that many people felt after United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen in December, but urging people not to let temporary setbacks undermine faith in long range success, Harvard University Professor Robert Stavins described the development of climate policy as “a marathon and not a sprint.’”

Negotiating Climate Change

Representatives of more than thirty UN missions, as well as academic and scientific experts on climate change, convened on April 17 and 18, 2009 to examine some of the major threats posed by climate change and existing gaps and inconsistencies in current efforts by individual states and the international community to address them.
About This Project
IPI’s work on climate change is focused on impacts of climate change on national and international security. A new addition to IPI’s research agenda, the climate change and international security project aims to provide innovative research and policy analysis to enhance understanding of this important relationship within the UN community as well as provide a forum for dialogue among member states, various UN entities, and leading experts.
