Considering Reform Options for International Environmental Governance
A recent roundtable discussion at IPI titled "Strengthening International Environmental Governance: Exploring System-Wide Responses" considered reform options for international environmental governance (IEG) in the context of the Belgrade Process, the Nairobi-Helsinki Outcome and the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) summit.

Acknowledging the disappointment that many people felt after United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen in December, but urging people not to let temporary setbacks undermine faith in long range success, Harvard University Professor Robert Stavins described the development of climate policy as “a marathon and not a sprint.’”

Study: 20 Million Displaced by Climate-related Disasters in 2008
An IPI policy forum launched a new joint study by a UN office and a prominent Norwegian group showing that 36 million people were displaced in 2008 by sudden onset natural disasters — 20 million of them by climate-related disasters such as storms and floods.

About This Project
IPI’s work on climate change is focused on impacts of climate change on national and international security. A new addition to IPI’s research agenda, the climate change and international security project aims to provide innovative research and policy analysis to enhance understanding of this important relationship within the UN community as well as provide a forum for dialogue among member states, various UN entities, and leading experts.
