IPI's Coping with Crisis program held a roundtable meeting on weapons of mass destruction at the Trygve Lie Center for Peace, Security, and Development. It was the second roundtable of "Task Force One: Transnational Security Challenges."

“Leaving Terrorism Behind” Brings Together Academics, UN Member States, and NGOs in New York City
IPI, in cooperation with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, convened a conference on “Leaving Terrorism Behind: Individual and Collective Disengagement from Violent Extremism,” on April 22nd. The event presented research to be included in a volume of that name, edited by Tore Bjørgo and John Horgan, examining disengagement and deradicalization programs in Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Opening Plenary on Transnational Security Challenges Launches IPI Task Force One
On April 2nd-4th, representatives of approximately forty UN member states met for the opening plenary meeting of IPI’s “Task Force One on Strengthening Multilateral Security Capacity,” at the Greentree Estate on Long Island. Task Force One will deal specifically with transnational security challenges; these include organized crime, weapons of mass destruction, counterterrorism, small arms, and biosecurity. Each of these issues will be examined in greater depth during roundtables to be held during April and May.

IPI organized a one-day, focused workshop on "Reviewing the Security Council's Counterterrorism Apparatus." The workshop, hosted in cooperation with the Center on Global Counterterrorism Cooperation, brought together experts from UN member states, UN Secretariat officials, and leading academic and nongovernmental experts to address the role of the Security Council and its counter-terrorism-related subsidiary bodies in the global fight against terrorism.
