Reviewing the Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Apparatus

IPA organized a one-day, focused workshop on “Reviewing the Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Apparatus.” The workshop, hosted in cooperation with the Center on Global Counter-Terrorism Cooperation, brought together experts from UN Member States, UN Secretariat officials and leading academic and non-governmental experts to address the role of the Security Council and its counter-terrorism-related subsidiary bodies in the global fight against terrorism.

This IPA/CGCTC event was the first of two workshops as part of our “Security Council Counter-Terrorism Review Project.”. The project will conclude with the release of a report in the second half of 2007, which will aim to provide independent recommendations for UN Member States and the broader UN community to consider in the lead up to the Security Council’s discussions surrounding the future of the Counter-Terrorism Executive Directorate. This first workshop highlighted some of the key issues and challenges facing the Council and its counter-terrorism subsidiary bodies. A second workshop will focus on the steps the Council might take to address them.
