Special Representative of the Secretary-General Atul Khare Discusses UN Efforts in Timor-Leste
On August 20, 2008, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Timor-Leste and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste Mr. Atul Khare addressed a select group of diplomats and other members of the United Nations and NGO communities in IPI’s Trygve Lie Center. In providing an informative account of UN statebuilding support efforts in Timor-Leste, he discussed the challenges associated with the raw scars of conflict in a country trying to rebuild its institutions and identity.

Mr. Khare’s diplomatic career has included postings as Deputy High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Counselor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York, and Chargé d’affaires of the Indian Embassy in Senegal with concurrent accreditation to Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mali, and Mauritania.
The well-attended event was part of IPI’s Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSG) series.
