IPI Polls New Mood in Egypt

Key findings of a new IPI poll show Amr Moussa as the front runner for the presidential election; the Egyptian Army is still popular, but slightly less than in previous polls; and Egyptians support moderate economic and foreign policies, as well as moderate parties and candidates.

The poll was conducted for the International Peace Institute by Charney Research.

Key Findings:

  • Amr Moussa appears as the front runner for the presidential election. But competition will increase once the presidential campaign commences.
  • Much will depend on which candidates will receive the backing of the Muslim Brotherhood and of the Tahrir Square groups. The outcome of the parliamentary elections in September will also have a decisive impact on the presidential race.
  • The Egyptian Army remains very popular but slightly less than in previous polls, which might be the sign of emerging frustration over the performance of the Military Council.
  • Egyptians are hopeful. They believe the country is going in the right direction and are firmly decided to vote in the upcoming national elections.
  • They support moderate economic and foreign policies as well as moderate parties and candidates.

This poll is based on 615 telephone interviews among a random sample of adult citizens throughout Egypt between March 9-20, 2011. The margin of error for the survey is +/- 4%.

Kai Eide: Peace Can Only Be Made By Afghans
“There is no other way. The United States, or NATO, or anybody else international, cannot make peace in Afghanistan,” Kai Eide, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan from March 2008-2010, told an IPI policy forum on January 26, 2012. “We can address some of the components perhaps, but peace in Afghanistan can only be made by the Afghans themselves, and therefore the Afghan government has to be brought on board.”

Mr. Moreno-Ocampo was responding to a question about why the court prosecutes certain people and not others. “Maybe you don’t like it, but I will not prosecute people for political reasons.”
