Long-time IPI Board Member and International Law Scholar Thomas Franck, 77, Dies
IPI Chair Rita Hauser has put out the following statement:
“It is with regret and sadness that I inform you of the death of our former and long-time Board member Professor Thomas Franck. After a long and brave battle with cancer, Tom died on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in New York. Tom was a staunch supporter of IPI and a leading contributor to the development of international law. We will miss him.”
Senior Vice President and Director of Studies Edward C. Luck issued this remembrance:
“Tom was the co-founder, along with Michael Doyle, of the Center for the Study of International Organization that I started some years ago at the NYU School of Law and the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton. He was always a most generous colleague, an insightful scholar, and a caring teacher. His zeal for international law was unceasing, while his devotion to the United Nations was sensibly tempered by deep and abiding concerns about its politics and practices. Among many other things, he was a role model for those of us seeking to combine scholarship and practice.”

Kai Eide: Peace Can Only Be Made By Afghans
“There is no other way. The United States, or NATO, or anybody else international, cannot make peace in Afghanistan,” Kai Eide, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan from March 2008-2010, told an IPI policy forum on January 26, 2012. “We can address some of the components perhaps, but peace in Afghanistan can only be made by the Afghans themselves, and therefore the Afghan government has to be brought on board.”

Moreno-Ocampo: "I Follow Evidence, Not Politics"
“I follow evidence. I’m a criminal prosecutor, I’m not a political analyst,” Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), told an IPI policy forum on January 20, 2012. Mr. Moreno-Ocampo was responding to a question about why the court prosecutes certain people and not others. “Maybe you don’t like it, but I will not prosecute people for political reasons.”
