Lessons Learned: Peacebuilding in Haiti
This seminar, held in New York on 23-24 January 2002, evaluated the international involvement in Haiti since the 1990 elections in order to extract lessons for future international peacebuilding activities there and elsewhere. Participants included key actors in the various international missions in Haiti, senior personnel from the Organization of American States, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and national capitals, as well as leading Haitian academics and other experts. Among the main conclusions of the seminar were the importance of national ownership of the peace-building process combined with a sustained international engagement built on a deep understanding of the country in question. The seminar findings are elaborated further in the seminar report written by Lotta Hagman. Funding was provided by the Governments of Canada and Norway.
