Special Representative of the Secretary-General Atul Khare Discusses UN Efforts in Timor-Leste
On August 20, 2008, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Timor-Leste and Head of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste Mr. Atul Khare addressed a select group of diplomats and other members of the United Nations and NGO communities in IPI’s Trygve Lie Center. In providing an informative account of UN statebuilding support efforts in Timor-Leste, he discussed the challenges associated with the raw scars of conflict in a country trying to rebuild its institutions and identity.

A new public opinion poll in Lebanon released by the International Peace Institute shows broad support for the United Nations and its peacekeeping and diplomatic activity in Lebanon, high confidence in the Lebanese Army and a pronounced concern over the role of armed militias and Hezbollah.

Conferences - June 25, 2008
On June 25th, IPI convened a meeting of its Forum on World Affairs for a discussion on the political and security situation in Afghanistan. The high-level roundtable meeting attracted a select group of UN ambassadors and senior officials from the UN Secretariat, among others, who discussed the question "What are the strategies to address the Afghanistan's political and security challenges?"
