This meeting note draws on the discussions held during the informal retreat of the UN Security Council in Istanbul, Turkey on June 25-26, 2010. The retreat was co-organized by the government of Turkey and the International Peace Institute.

Africa's leaders gathered at Speke Resort Munyonyo on the shores of Lake Victoria on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital Kampala on July 25th for the African Union bi-annual summit. This was the 15th meeting since the continental body was founded eight years ago.

This year the General Assembly and the Security Council will review the UN Peacebuilding Commission (PBC)—a promising, but so far problematic, new UN organ. It is important that this opportunity is not squandered or the PBC could risk becoming yet another irrelevant UN body.

On June 19th, IPI convened a full-day meeting of UN member states and Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSGs), with the goal of sharing lessons learned from UN field missions. The dialogue featured Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and speakers drawn from the highest levels of the UN Secretariat and was held under the Chatham House Rule.
