Kai Eide: Peace Can Only Be Made By Afghans

“There is no other way. The United States, or NATO, or anybody else international, cannot make peace in Afghanistan,” Kai Eide, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan from March 2008-2010, told an IPI policy forum on January 26, 2012. “We can address some of the components perhaps, but peace in Afghanistan can only be made by the Afghans themselves, and therefore the Afghan government has to be brought on board.”

Moreno-Ocampo: "I Follow Evidence, Not Politics"

“I follow evidence. I’m a criminal prosecutor, I’m not a political analyst,” Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), told an IPI policy forum on January 20, 2012. Mr. Moreno-Ocampo was responding to a question about why the court prosecutes certain people and not others. “Maybe you don’t like it, but I will not prosecute people for political reasons.”

On November 1st, IPI hosted a one-day workshop, co-organized with the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to review the UN Security Council’s efforts at enhancing accountability for better protection of civilians in armed conflict.

President Ouattara: Main Issue for Côte d’Ivoire Is Reconciliation

“The main issue that we’re addressing—reconciliation,” Alassane Ouattara, the President of Côte d’Ivoire, told an overflow audience at IPI on September 22nd. The President, who took office in May, outlined steps that he was taking to bring people together in his country, which was convulsed by violence in the six months following the November election when the loser, former President Laurent Gbagbo, refused to step down.

Jonas Gahr Støre, the Foreign Minister of Norway, and chair of the Fourth Annual Trygve Lie Symposium on Fundamental Freedoms at IPI made this reference in opening the discussion September 21st at this year’s symposium, which focused on The Role of Social Media in Promoting Democratization and Human Rights: Prospects and Challenges.

Tunisia Envoy Jomaa: "Transitional Justice is Needed Now"

"There is a strong belief that transitional justice is needed now, both to demonstrate a real break with the past, but also to make sure that a new Tunisia is built on a solid foundation of respect for the rule of the law that includes accountability of its leaders, current and former," said Ambassador Ghazi Jomaa of Tunisia at a May 16th panel discussion at IPI.

Lessons Learned from the Southern Sudan Referendum Process

On April 29th, IPI hosted a lunchtime policy forum on "Lessons Learned from the Southern Sudan Referendum Process.” Professor Mohamed I. Khalil and Justice Chan Reec Madut, the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, respectively, made opening remarks on the lessons learned from the year-long process to enable the people of Southern Sudan to exercise their right to self-determination.

Professor Khalil has served the Republic of the Sudan as Minister of Justice, Speaker of the Constituent Assembly, and as the first Dean of Law at Khartoum University.

Justice Chan most recently served as the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Southern Sudan and as Legal Adviser to the First Vice President of the Republic and President of the Government of Southern Sudan.

The event was held under the Chatham House rule of non-attribution. It was moderated by Dr. Edward C. Luck.

SRSG Ad Melkert on Iraq's Three Key Issues

Speaking at IPI on April 7th, Ad Melkert, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq, identified three key issues fueling demonstrations in Iraq and elsewhere in the region: the need for better services; more jobs, particularly for young people; and a way to end corruption, which he said is endemic in Iraq.
